CHICOPEE – A call for a disturbance turned into a brawl Saturday morning, leaving three officers injured and three people arrested for allegedly attacking them.
Officer Will Kelly was on patrol at about 6:10 a.m. when he was approached by a woman who told him there was a disturbance in an apartment at 20 Riverview Place and it “had the potential to get very bad,” said Michael Wilk, police public information officer.
When he arrived there was a man banging on the door, but he said there was no issues so Kelly cleared the call. Soon after there was another call for a disturbance at the same location and Kelly returned to find a woman yelling and banging on the door and causing a disturbance, Wilk said.
When he asked the woman to stop, she swore at him. Kelly then called for backup, he said.

“As he did this, the female turned and punched him in the face. As he grabbed the female to place her under arrest, the other two male parties begin advancing on him. He pushed her back to create distance and at that point all three attacked him,” Wilk said.
The three pushed and hit him, grabbed his vest and pulled on his uniform. He was able to strike two of his attackers and call for assistance, asking for more officers be sent quickly, he said.
“As this happened, the three parties attacked again. The female then grabbed him by the throat and was attempting to choke him, leaving a cut on his throat,” Wilk said.
Officer Kyle Whalley then arrived. While he was trying to handcuff one of the men, the woman allegedly grabbed Whalley in the groin area, forcing him to defend himself. Several other officers then arrived and were eventually able to handcuff the three suspects, he said.
Jaikeymia McGowan, 22, of 20 Riverview Place, Chicopee; Michael Sweeney, 25, of 65 Berkshire St., Holyoke and Isreal Rivera, 24, of 470 Memorial Drive, Chicopee, were all charged with assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. McGowan was also charged with strangulation/suffocation and Rivera was also arrested on a warrant for larceny, he said.
Three officers were treated for hand and rib injuries and released. They remain out of work while they recover, Wilk said.
Three cruisers had to be decontaminated because all three people arrested allegedly spit blood and mucus all inside the cars. McGowan is also accused of spitting blood in the face of one of the arresting officers, he said.
After being booked, McGowan was released on $290 bail and the two men were held on $500. The men were transferred to the Hampden Correctional Center in Ludlow where bail amounts were increased to $2,500 for Sweeney and Rivera is being held without bail until his arraignment on Monday, Wilk said.
